Beekeepers, whether beginning this year or long established with colonies, need to monitor for varroa mites. This is the week of the first ever Annual Mite-a-Thon. Webinar will discuss how to collect a 300 bee sample and monitor with either sugar shake or alcohol wash the mite level in your colonies.to figure% infestation rate. Upload your data to a national wide.website to join others in this snapshot of the mite situation nations. Mite levels also discussed along with options to reduce mite populations if monitoring reveals high than desirable mite numbers.

 

Dr. Dewey M. Caron is Emeritus Professor of Entomology & Wildlife Ecology, Univ of Delaware, & Affiliate Professor, Dept Horticulture, Oregon State University. He has 50+ years beekeeping, including teaching beekeeping, bee/pollinator extension and honey/native bee research at Cornell (1966-70), University of MD (1970-1981) and University of DE (1981-2009). Following retirement, he moved from east coast to Portland, OR to be closer to (and spoil) 5 grandkids while continuing writing, talking about bees and teaching beekeeping short courses and working with local bee associations. He has 5 backyard colonies in Tigard, OR. He spends 5 months in Bolivia where he keeps 8+ colonies of Africanized bees and teaches beekeeping at University de San Simon as well as beekeeping among native communities in the Andes Mountains.
He is author of HONEY BEE BIOLOGY & BEEKEEPING, a popular textbook for learning beekeeping, AFRICANIZED HONEY BEES IN THE AMERICAS and numerous other books and materials for beekeepers. He is frequent contributor to beekeeping newsletters on both east and west coast. Dr. Caron has been on the consultant committee for the Mite-a-Thon event and is the author of the HBHC Varroa Mite guide.
