Important Honey Bee Surveys: The Bee Informed Partnership Needs Your Help

Surveys Open Through April 18, 2011

Dear ABF Members,

I strongly encourage you to participate in the Bee Informed surveys (additional information is listed below). The best way to sort out the “fact from fiction” of our honey bee health and loss problems is with correct information from beekeepers. The people involved in this project have devoted a significant amount of time and energy to put these surveys together. They are doing their part, so it is very important for ALL BEEKEEPERS to help out.

Early reports from the Bee Informed group indicate that they are getting a good response from small-scale beekeepers, but not a lot so far from larger commercial outfits. I understand that this is a very busy time for all of us, but please find a few minutes to complete these surveys. It may be the best way for our industry to communicate to policy makers the serious problems that we are having. I have completed my survey already and was a bit surprised at my own numbers. For every thousand hives I operate, I am making at least that many splits per year. You may also benefit from the time spent looking at your own numbers.

The word “unsustainable” has been used often by beekeepers to describe the current position we are in. This description is discounted as “anecdotal” until we have some sort of official statistics. This is your chance to be a part of an important effort to collect that data. PLEASE MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD!

ABF President

The Bee Informed Partnership needs your help! Please take 20 minutes out of your busy day to complete these two surveys. Both surveys are open through April 18, 2011.

The purpose of the Bee Informed Partnership is to use beekeepers’ real-world experiences to help solve beekeepers’ real-world problems. We will use the data generated from these two surveys to help you decide which management practices are best for beekeepers like you, who live where you do and have operations similar to yours. For this to work, we need as many participants as possible, so please take the time to fill out the questionnaire and SEND THIS E-MAIL TO ALL THE BEEKEEPERS YOU KNOW asking them to fill out these questionnaires, too.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us at askbeeinformed@gmail.com or call us at 443.296.2470. You can learn more about the Bee Informed Partnership at www.beeinformed.org.

Thank you,

The Bee Informed Partnership Team
