Fight Continues for a National Standard of Identity for Honey

Fifteen Senators Ask FDA for Assistance

In a continued effort to implement a national standard of identity for honey, members of the U.S. Senate recently sent another communication to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requesting urgent action and the promulgation of a final rule.

The letter, which was signed by 15 senators, calls attention to the fact that a standard of identity will not only protect consumers, but will also aid American buyers and sellers of honey.  The letter also notes, "Many foods have long had a standard of identity, and there is no justification of treating honey differently."   View the full letter here.

The following senators signed the FDA letter:

  • Bob Casey (D-PA)
  • John Thune (R-SD)
  • Bernard Sanders (I-VT)
  • Charles Schumer (D-NY)
  • Max Baucus (D-MT)
  • Kent Conrad (D-ND)
  • John Cornyn (R-TX)
  • Sam Brownback (R-KS)
  • Michael Johanns (R-NE)
  • Saxby Chambliss (R-GA)
  • Byron Dorgan (D-ND)
  • Tim Johnson (D-SD)
  • Michael Crapo (R-ID)
  • Tom Harkin (D-IA)
  • James Risch (R-ID)
