Bee Problems & Beginning Beekeeping

Non-Beekeeper with Unwanted Bees

If you have unwanted bees around your home, you can:
a. Call an exterminator, who will probably have to kill the bees to remove them.
Or b. Call a beekeeper, who may be able to remove them without killing them.

In Order to Locate a Beekeeper:
1. Look in the Yellow Pages under BEEKEEPER or HONEY.
2. Contact your County Extension Service, which may be listed under the name of your state’s agricultural university.
3. Ask your fire or police department. They often have lists of beekeepers who will take unwanted bees.

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REMOVE THE BEES YOURSELF, UNLESS YOU ARE AN EXPERIENCED BEEKEEPER!

Beginning Beekeeper with Beekeeping Questions

Make friends with another local beekeeper, and join the local bee club (SEE In Order to Locate a Beekeeper, and also check out the links under Internet Resources for a list of bee clubs.)

The County Extension Service also may have technical bulletins on beekeeping, and they have access to beekeeping specialist in your state’s agricultural university. In addition to these resources, consult your state or county’s agriculture department, your public library, and of course, the Internet.

If you exhaust all of these possibilities, please feel free to contact the ABF. We offer a free packet of Beginning Beekeeping information. We just need your name, address, and phone number. For a more specific question, we will need: a brief description of your beekeeping experience; the number of bee colonies you possess; the name of your nearest large city; and your name, address, phone, & fax. Please allow up to 10 days for a reply.

Thanks for your interest in bees, and please let us know what you think!
