ELAP Emergency Assistance Still Available

Applications Due by January 30, 2012

USDA's Farm Service Agency (FSA) reminds livestock owners they have until Monday, January 30, 2012, to submit an application for payment under the 2012 Emergency Assistance for Livestock, Honey Bees and Farm-raised Fish Program (ELAP). ELAP provides emergency assistance to eligible producers of livestock grazing, honey bees and farm-raised fish who have losses due to disease, adverse weather or other conditions, including losses due to blizzards and wildfires.


NASS Reinstates Annual Bee/Honey Production Report

Next Report Due March 30, 2012

NASS leadership recently concluded a deliberate review of all programs against mission- and user-based criteria, aimed at finding cost savings and forward-thinking business efficiencies so that timely, accurate and useful data remains available in service to agriculture. These efforts and more over the last year have allowed NASS leadership the flexibility within its budget to retain and reinstate several key reports, including the critical Annual Bee and Honey Report.

USDA/AIA Survey Reports 2010/2011 Winter Honey Bee Losses

Report Reveals Average Individual Colony Loss 38.4 Percent

Total losses from managed honey bee colonies nationwide were 30 percent from all causes for the 2010/2011 winter, according to the annual survey conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Apiary Inspectors of America (AIA). This is roughly similar to total losses reported in similar surveys done in the four previous years: 34 percent for the 2009/2010 winter, 29 percent for 2008/2009; 36 percent for 2007/2008, and 32 percent for 2006/2007.

USDA ARS Releases Annual Honey Industry Survey

Survey Reveals U.S. Honey Production Up 20 Percent; Record High Honey Prices

Honey production in 2010 from producers with five or more colonies totaled 176 million pounds, up 20 percent
from 2009. There were 2.68 million colonies producing honey in 2010, up 7 percent from 2009. Yield per colony averaged 65.5 pounds, up 12 percent from the 58.6 pounds in 2009. In addition, honey prices increased to a record high during 2010 to 160.3 cents, up 9 percent from 147.3 cents in 2009.
